Why Is Alex Smith Favored To Win Comeback Player Of The Year?

  • Alex Smith is favored to win the comeback player of the year with -330 NFL odds.
  • Alex Smith has not played a full NFL game since 2018.

WASHINGTON D.C. - When sports bettors look at the NFL odds for the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award, they will be met with a surprising name at the top of the odds board and that is Washington Football Team’s quarterback, Alex Smith.

NFL sportsbooks currently have Smith at the top of the NFL odds board and surprisingly as the heavy favorite at that as well.

2020-21 AP NFL Comeback Player Of The Year

  • Alex Smith -330
  • Cam Newton +425
  • Ben Roethlisberger +450
  • Aldon Smith +1400
  • J.J. Watt +2000
  • Myles Garrett +3500
  • Nick Foles (CHI) +3500
  • Bradley Chubb +5000
  • Matthew Stafford +5000
  • Rob Gronkowski (TB) +5000
  • A.J. Green +10000
  • Stephen Gostkowski +10000
  • Xavien Howard +10000
  • Akiem Hicks +750000
  • Trent Williams +750000

The fact that Smith is seen as the heavy favorite here should have bettors looking at one of the longshot options almost immediately. Smith has not played in a full NFL game since back in 2018 when he suffered a gruesome leg injury while still playing for the Washington Football Team.

Smith saw his first action in since his injury in Week 5 of the season where he actually started the game but ended up coming out mid-way for Kyle Allen.

Smith started the game in place of Dwayne Haskins and put up just 37 passing yards on 9/17 completions and was sacked six times.

Something else that should raise concerns when betting on Smith to win the award is that he is not even listed as the starting quarterback here. Since Haskins was benched, it is Kyle Allen who is currently listed as the teams starter while Smith will serve as the primary backup.

Where Else To Bet

Being that Smith is the favorite for some odd reason, NFL bettors should take advantage of the longshot odds situation on both Cam Newton and Ben Roethlisberger.

Starting with Cam Newton, he has really been able to find himself during his first season with the New England Patriots. In the three games that he has played this season, he has put up 714 passing yards and two touchdowns but has also rushed for 149 yards and four touchdowns.

The Pats are currently sitting with a 2-2 record and if Cam keeps it up, he could very well make bettors happy with a nice payout.

Looking at Ben Roethlisberger, this is where the real money will come as he has been on an absolute tear this season. He has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a perfect 4-0 start to the season and looks like he is back to his pre-injured form. Big Ben has put up great numbers thus far having thrown for 1,016 yards and 10 touchdowns and just one interception.
