Will The Patriots Move On From Brady In The Draft?

  • The New England Patriots are still in need of a quarterback after losing Tom Brady in free agency.
  • New England owns 12 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.
  • Jalen Hurts, Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm could step in under center for them.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. The New England Patriots are still feeling the effects of Tom Brady leaving. With no definite answer for them under center, they could take a chance in the 2020 NFL Draft by picking either Jacob Eason, Jalen Hurts, and Jake Fromm.

They currently own 12 picks in this year’s draft including one in the first round and three in the third round. Online Sportsbooks have released odds on which of the three quarterbacks would be selected first.

Jacob Eason

Eason could be an interesting fit in New England. The Patriots could use a quarterback like Eason in order to fill the hole created by Tom Brady’s departure. In fact, he has a very similar play style to Brady as he is not known as a rushing quarterback and is known to throw the higher percentage passes.

Jacob Eason would definitely take some time to develop, but his playstyle is what New England is used to and could be worth the wait for them. Of the three quarterbacks, Eason has the highest odds to be drafted first at -110.

Jalen Hurts

Hurts would be a long-term project for New England’s quarterback situation for sure. Hurts style of play is what is up and coming at the quarterback position in the NFL – mobility outside the pocket and the ability to run for first downs. The only downside here is that his style is not what the Patriots are used to.

Jalen Hurts would help modernize this Patriots offense by adding an element not yet coached by Bill Belichick. He wouldn’t be effective right away but it would be an ideal situation for both sides as they can help each other. Hurts’ NFL draft odds are second on the odds board at being the first of the three selected at +130.

Jake Fromm

Jake Fromm is still a work I progress as well and the Patriots have to know that. He did have some beneficial years playing at Georgia, but he still needs to mature into an NFL quarterback. Though he is not known to run with the ball, he is known to take deep shots down the field rather than higher percentage pass. His biggest weakness might be his arm strength according to scouts.

There is no better situation for Fromm to walk into than New England. It will most definitely take some time, but with the coaching ability of Bill Belichick, they could have a bright young quarterback to rely on. Fromm’s odds to be drafted first of the three sit in third at +475. Those betting on New England may want to steer clear from this underdog.
