McCaffrey Acquisition Juices 49ers Odds At Online Sportsbooks

  • The San Francisco 49ers have acquired Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers.
  • This move jolted them from +2500 odds to win the Super Bowl to +1400 odds to do so.
  • It also pushed their O/U back to where it was in the preseason:-150 odds to win more than 9.5 games.

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco 49ers have acquired star running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers, and the online sportsbooks believe he can turn around their rocky start.

The following odds were taken from the online sportsbook at Bovada.

The 49ers have been slipping from their preseason odds to win the Super Bowl – before the McCaffrey trade, they were sitting at +2500 odds to do so.

After the McCaffrey trade, they’re almost exactly where they started the season: at +1400 odds to win the Super Bowl, giving them the fifth shortest odds to do so.

Super Bowl 57: Odds to Win

  • Buffalo Bills +275
  • Philadelphia Eagles +550
  • Kansas City Chiefs +800
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers +900
  • San Francisco 49ers +1400

This comes despite all the turmoil in San Francisco this year – the loss of starting quarterback Trey Lance, the fact that they started the season 3-3 and managed to somehow lose to the Chicago Bears, and the injury to starting running back Elijah Mitchell.

Perhaps a part of this is that the 49ers did not send out any current players in the deal for McCaffrey.

Here’s what the 49ers gave up to get Christian McCaffrey:

  • 1 2023 NFL Draft second-round pick
  • 1 2023 NFL Draft third-round pick
  • 1 2023 NFL Draft fourth-round pick
  • 1 2024 NFL Draft fifth-round pick

This move represents a commitment to San Francisco’s current core – and could be great for QB Jimmy Garoppolo, whose limitations are well known, but can easily be mitigated by having an elite receiver as a backfield weapon in addition to Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.

San Francisco 49ers Wins O/U

  • Over 9.5 -150
  • Under 9.5 +115

The trade also pushed the 49ers’ wins O/U back to preseason levels, which is remarkable in the context of them being a .500 team so far.

There are only 11 games left to play, and the Niners will need to win seven of them to cover this line, but the online sportsbooks have even given them nearly the same shading as the preseason, with -150 odds to do so.
